robins every where

this morning, I saw a lot of robins! every where I looked, I saw robins! most people I know say that robins migrate and go to Mexico for the winter, but I know that is not true. in fact, I see more robins in the winter then I do in the summer. it is because robins are in HUGE groups in the winter and spread out in the summer! this is because they protect there nesting territory, and do not let any other robins around it. so it seems like there are more robins in the winter then in the summer because of that.

new monthly poll

I have a new poll, it is, what is your favorite color? that is my sisters idea :) but I could not think of anything else, so I went with it.

2 more birds that aren't on my life list

lesser white fronted goose and Chinese goose. I went to a farm and walked all around the farm! there were lesser white fronted geese there, and Chinese geese. lesser white fronted geese are very rare, the geese were domesticated. also, I found their nest and there were a bunch of eggs!!! well anyway, I had fun.

that makes my life list 98!!!

hering gull

today, when I was birding, it was pretty normal, 200 pine siskens, house finches, doves, all that, when I saw a Herring gull which is not on my life list yet. I can tell it is a Herring gull, because it looks just like a California gull(or sea gull) just much bigger. a california gull is around 22 inches, a Herring gull is around 25 to 26 inches, in a bird, inches make a huge difference. the hering gull makes my life list 96!!

100+ pine siskens

today, when I went out side, I about fell backwards on the ground! so this is what happened, so I go out side to watch birds, but before I go out there, there are over 100 pine sisken and other birds on the ground right outside our back door! so I go out there and all the birds fly off the ground witch is so surprising that I almost fell on my back! and when I got out there, I had to hold my ears, if you know what sound pine siskens make, then you can imagine what it's like with over hundred of them.
for some information about pine siskens, click here, and here this one tells what sound it makes, and here. pine siskens are cool birds!

no more male juncos

first, let me explain what juncos are, they are birds with black heads and brown wings and white underparts, the thing is they migrate north for the summer(they are here in winter but up north for summer) OK, now that you know a little bit about juncos, I'll explain the story.

so today, when I was watching birds, I noticed that there were no male juncos(you can tell if there males, if they have a much darker head) you are probably wondering why? well, they actually migrate before the females, to set up a territory! pretty cool huh! juncos are pretty cool birds!

nesting in our yard!!

today, I found out that there are some starling that are nesting in a crack in between our porch roof and our house roof, (that tells how old this house is) they did the same thing last year, it is all ways fun (no matter what bird it is) to watch them nest. There are a lot of people that think starlings are pests, but I think all birds should be able to nest, and are fun.

I encourage you to build or buy a bird house and put it up, not just to help the bird, but to be something fun for you to watch! it is very fun, I promise you.

the best place to put a bird house is in trees where you see the birds most often, don't get worried if the birds have a Lot of competition, because they will, if there is to much, then just put up another bird house! trees, bushes, fences with bushes around it, these are all good places to put up a bird house. if you don't know how big a bird house should be, then buy a birdhouse book to help, or just by a birdhouse, I would get the book, because then you can build birdhouses whenever you want, I recommend the stokes birdhouse book, click here. well... just an encouragement to get some bird houses up!

birds are everywhere

today, I woke up early to fill up the feeders and noticed that there where birds every were!! so I filled up the feeders and put some cracked walnuts on the ground, then I went inside and noticed that I had forgotten to put some ground seed out on the ground, so I got the bag of bird seed and I had also noticed that there was a group of pine siskens at my feeders, so I got a hand full of seed and was about to through it when a pine sisken landed right on my hand and started eating the birdseed out of my hand!!!

I also saw
flickers,
finches,
house and junco sparrows,
blue gray warblers,
starlings,
robins,
California gulls,
Eurasian colored doves,
morning doves,
and downy woodpeckers.

anyway, today has been a great day for birding!
