105 post!!

this post that i am posting right now, is my 105th post! It has taken me 9 months to do that! I am glad I have done that much and am happy to continue posting!

I have not told you that I follow baseball, I am on the city league team, I am on the ST. louis cardinals! So far we have played 7 games, and are tied with another team for second place. Last week we were tied for first place but then we lost a game on thursday. We play 13 games in a season, and so far, I think our team is good enough to make it in to tournaments.

Baseball is now my favorite sport(again for the third time), I keep swithing what my favorite sport is, but I think that baseball is going to stay my favorite now.

I took teeball twice when i was 4 and 6, I took soccer when I was5 and 7, and I took mustang league baseball when I was 9, and now I take pinto league baseball at the age of 11. That is a lot of sports! it has been hard for my mom to come to all my baseball games(2 a week) but I am very greatful to her fore allways supporting me. Thanks mom. Well that is all for now.

robin nest !

(First i must say that we did take pictures but the computer freezes when we try to upload pictures, so there are no pictures.)

So we built a platform birdhouse, it is just a 5" deep platform, 7" long, with walls, and no roof.
We attached it under the roof overhang to the part of the rain gutter where it carries the water to the ground. Before I say anything else, I must say that there was already a robin nest there before we put the platform there, so that is half the reason they found it. So about 3-4 days later, a pair of robins started to put nesting material in the platform. there are now five eggs in the nest, and the female has started to incubate the eggs. I am excited to see what happens.

the best place to put it would be under your house over hang, so it does not need a roof, if you are putting it in a tree you will need a platform with a roof

first day of moving, too today

so, on this post, I am going to explain from day one too today, all the birds that I have seen.

OK, so the first day that we moved here, I did not have bird seed out, so I just watched all the robins and what they were doing, but the next morning, I found out that my dad had put bird seed out (I could tell because of all the birds that were there) so we went to our old house to clean up the yard, and that took all day. so the next morning(I had already put the bird feeders up) I watched pine siskins, American goldfinches, and house finches find the feeders all day. the next morning, I went to the birding window, and guess what I saw! red crossbills!!! (if you don't know what that is then just see my last post and click on the bird links) later that day a red winged blackbird visited my feeder!! I am hoping that it will come back. since then i have just been having the normal house finches and goldfinches visiting my feeder.

but yesterday!! I saw the years first black chinned hummingbird!!!!!!!! just can't wait for summer!!

moved, and all the thousands of birds around the new house

so first, we moved in to a new house, the first night I was in the new house, I saw over a hundred of robins, they were all over the place. the next day I noticed that my dad had put bird seed out, thanks dad! because of that there have been a bunch of birds, I will name all the birds that I have seen around the new house and give a short story about it.

american goldfinch,
house finch,
red crossbill,
red winged blackbird,
house sparrow,
Eurasian colored dove,
morning dove.

this is a bird heaven for me!

robins every where

this morning, I saw a lot of robins! every where I looked, I saw robins! most people I know say that robins migrate and go to Mexico for the winter, but I know that is not true. in fact, I see more robins in the winter then I do in the summer. it is because robins are in HUGE groups in the winter and spread out in the summer! this is because they protect there nesting territory, and do not let any other robins around it. so it seems like there are more robins in the winter then in the summer because of that.

new monthly poll

I have a new poll, it is, what is your favorite color? that is my sisters idea :) but I could not think of anything else, so I went with it.

finches are every were!

Today, at my feeders, there have been way more finches then normal, such as:

house finches,
pine siskens
and even goldfinches!!

the thing about it is is that there were tons of them every were, I don't know why, I guess it was just a good day for finches.

bird update

lately, I have been watching birds a lot because of the snow storm. birds have been everywhere, I have seen all the winter feeding birds that have lately been coming to my feeder.

about life: life has been going well, we are completely ready to move but are just waiting to hear if we can move, we are having some people coming to help us move on Tuesday. so we'll see how it goes. right now I have been challenged to see who can do the biggest blog the fastest!

the person who challenged me to do this is my cousin Hilary, she has a blog at:

Tree Frog

bluebird listing

today, I saw a mountain bluebird around our house, it is not on my life list so that will make my life list 99!!!!!!!!!!!!

snow storm :(

in spanish fork, we had a huge snow storm :( I do not like snow storms :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( but goooooooood for birds

2 more birds that aren't on my life list

lesser white fronted goose and Chinese goose. I went to a farm and walked all around the farm! there were lesser white fronted geese there, and Chinese geese. lesser white fronted geese are very rare, the geese were domesticated. also, I found their nest and there were a bunch of eggs!!! well anyway, I had fun.

that makes my life list 98!!!

hering gull

today, when I was birding, it was pretty normal, 200 pine siskens, house finches, doves, all that, when I saw a Herring gull which is not on my life list yet. I can tell it is a Herring gull, because it looks just like a California gull(or sea gull) just much bigger. a california gull is around 22 inches, a Herring gull is around 25 to 26 inches, in a bird, inches make a huge difference. the hering gull makes my life list 96!!

100+ pine siskens

today, when I went out side, I about fell backwards on the ground! so this is what happened, so I go out side to watch birds, but before I go out there, there are over 100 pine sisken and other birds on the ground right outside our back door! so I go out there and all the birds fly off the ground witch is so surprising that I almost fell on my back! and when I got out there, I had to hold my ears, if you know what sound pine siskens make, then you can imagine what it's like with over hundred of them.
for some information about pine siskens, click here, and here this one tells what sound it makes, and here. pine siskens are cool birds!

no more male juncos

first, let me explain what juncos are, they are birds with black heads and brown wings and white underparts, the thing is they migrate north for the summer(they are here in winter but up north for summer) OK, now that you know a little bit about juncos, I'll explain the story.

so today, when I was watching birds, I noticed that there were no male juncos(you can tell if there males, if they have a much darker head) you are probably wondering why? well, they actually migrate before the females, to set up a territory! pretty cool huh! juncos are pretty cool birds!

to learn more about juncos, click here

nesting in our yard!!

today, I found out that there are some starling that are nesting in a crack in between our porch roof and our house roof, (that tells how old this house is) they did the same thing last year, it is all ways fun (no matter what bird it is) to watch them nest. There are a lot of people that think starlings are pests, but I think all birds should be able to nest, and are fun.

I encourage you to build or buy a bird house and put it up, not just to help the bird, but to be something fun for you to watch! it is very fun, I promise you.

the best place to put a bird house is in trees where you see the birds most often, don't get worried if the birds have a Lot of competition, because they will, if there is to much, then just put up another bird house! trees, bushes, fences with bushes around it, these are all good places to put up a bird house. if you don't know how big a bird house should be, then buy a birdhouse book to help, or just by a birdhouse, I would get the book, because then you can build birdhouses whenever you want, I recommend the stokes birdhouse book, click here. well... just an encouragement to get some bird houses up!

birds are everywhere

today, I woke up early to fill up the feeders and noticed that there where birds every were!! so I filled up the feeders and put some cracked walnuts on the ground, then I went inside and noticed that I had forgotten to put some ground seed out on the ground, so I got the bag of bird seed and I had also noticed that there was a group of pine siskens at my feeders, so I got a hand full of seed and was about to through it when a pine sisken landed right on my hand and started eating the birdseed out of my hand!!!

I also saw
house and junco sparrows,
blue gray warblers,
California gulls,
Eurasian colored doves,
morning doves,
and downy woodpeckers.

anyway, today has been a great day for birding!

long time no... blog

We had Internet disconnected for a month or two, so I have not blogged in awhile. First, how was Christmas? How was New Years? Please comment. I have not seen any birds at the feeder for awhile. My cousin and I had a challenge (again) to see who could see the most birds in a week. It was fun. The score was, 48(me) to 32(my cousin) yea... I win! Anyway it was all fun. In the summer, we're planning on doing the same challenge, except with reptiles instead of birds. For Christmas, I got a Nerf gun, a flint and steel, the game Risk, two flash lights, and a whole lot of candy! For New Years, we stayed home and watched three movies, and of course ate food. Well... that's all that the Olson family did.

the chukar /grouse hunt

So today, (Saturday) we went hunting, it was fun, we went to the tippy top of west mountain, to chukar (a bird) hunt, but did not see anything, so we went to Santaquin Canyon to grouse (also a bird) hunt, and did not see anything there either, so we then went to black hawk, which is payson canyon, and saw one grouse there but was too far away to shoot. With us(my dad and I) it always works out the same way every time, when ever we go by our self, we see tons of what were looking for, but when we go with some one else we don't see a thing.

Friday, November 28, 2008

OK, i just want to know what your favorite book is? I really like the Great Brain, and Animal Farm. Please comment and tell me what your favorite book is. Those books that I named are great books. The only thing about animal farm is it's not great for smaller kids. It could scare them, because the bad guys in the book end up winning, but it's still a good book.

this year, all our family came to our house for thanksgiving!!! it was so much fun! when you read this post, please comment about what you did for thanksgiving.

sorry no pictures.

Monday, November 24, 2008

scout camp out

On Saturday, I went on a scout camp out!! It was so much fun! We camped at Diamond Fork canyon. Here is something that was funny about the camp out. When we got there, we started a fire and then went to bed, then the next morning, all the scouts woke up before the scout leaders and tried to make a fire. We probably used ten matches and still did not have a fire. Then our leader woke up and came out and got the fire going by blowing on it because it was still hot and had Coals that were hot from the night before, and all day continuously made fun of us by saying (how many matches did I use again?)l.o.l (lough. out. loud.) When we woke up, our toes were freezing, but itwas still fun. I had a hard time getting my shoes on because my feet were so cold. We had tinfoil dinners, pancakes and eggs for breakfast, and sack lunches for lunch.

blog problem

I am trying to post some songs that my cousin and I made up, but it won't let me. Does anyone know how to do that? if you do, please tell me. Well this morning there were tons of birds, mainly house sparrows, and some finches, but no juncos.

amazing birds!

I have at least 20 Eurasian collared doves coming at one time!!! It is weird that all those doves are coming at once. They are amazing birds! They are interesting to watch. When they eat they do not crack the seed, they actually put the seed in a pouch that is behind their tongue, and then later on they take the seed out of their pouch and then crack it and eat it. Is that not amazing?

drawing #2

Today I did a drawing!!! It is a Cardinal.

Today I went to my first Basketball game!!! It was fun. Our team lost 19 to 25. They are a hard team, but I still had a lot of fun!!!!!!!! We have really good players on our team!!! Not including me. I am not too good, but still fun!!!

mckay's birds

There are birds that are called McKay's buntings. Funny, huh. Ha he he!!! I can't get a picture because they are not around here. They range in Alaska so I would have to go to Alaska to get a picture of one. They are just all white with brown wings.

this morning

This morning when I woke up there were birds everywhere!!! They were everywhere!!! Birds!! Birds!!! Birds !!!! And more birds!!!!!!!. There were doves, sparrows, juncos, and house finches!!!!!!! They eat seed really fast though, and that can get annoying, but either birds and spend money or don't spend money and don't have birds. I choose birds!!!
